You Don’t Know Their Story

No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.
-Eleanor Roosevelt

The “gay boy” you punched in the hall today committed suicide a few minutes ago. The boy you called lame, has to work every night to support his family. That girl you pushed down the other day, she’s already being abused at home. That boy you called fat; he’s starving himself. The old man you made fun of because of the ugly scars on his face; he fought for our country. The boy you made fun of for crying; his mother is dying. You think you know them, but you don’t. You really don’t know anyone’s story and to bully or hate another, is wrong. It is mean. It is hurtful. It is devastating. Please consider the negative impact you make on someone with your words, judgment, criticism, hatred. People are born with the features God gave them. People are raised in the circumstances they were born into. People do their best to overcome their challenges and to face each day, with their heads up. It isn’t an easy task, for any of us. Imagine a world where we are kind to one another. Imagine a world where we support one another, in spite of our differences. Imagine knowing that you are truly loved, no matter what. My prayer is that you choose kindness. My prayer is that you see yourself and everyone you encounter, as a precious child of God. Smile. Acknowledge their presence; their existence. My hope is that we will all truly see and hear others and in turn, others will truly see and hear us. Imagine what a difference these simple ideas would create in the world.
